Pfannenstiel
Zürich's classic ridge climb from the Greifensee to the Zürichsee

Overview
The Pfannenstiel is the wooded ridge that separates the Greifensee from the Zürichsee, and the road over it is one of the classic local climbs for riders out of Zürich. Taken from the Greifensee side it's a steady, honest pull rather than anything fierce — 5.9 km averaging 4.5% to the 728 m high point — and the reward is in the views: the Alps strung across the horizon and the Greifensee laid out below as you climb. The road is open to traffic but stays rather quiet, and it's a perennial favourite with cyclists. At the top there's a water fountain where just about everyone stops to fill up and take it in.

Ascent
From the Greifensee shore at around 460 m the road tips up gently and settles into a steady rhythm. It's never a wall: the gradient sits around 4–5% for most of the climb, with a brief flat shelf in the middle to catch your breath before the upper section ramps back up to a steeper pitch touching 10% on the way to the ridge. The whole way up the views open out behind you — the Greifensee spread out below and, on a clear day, the Alps lined across the horizon. At 279 m of gain over 5.9 km it's a genuine novice climb: enough to feel like a proper effort, never enough to put you in trouble. The top, at 728 m, comes with a water fountain where everyone pulls in.

Descent
The drop toward the Zürichsee is the kind of descent you wish every climb had. It loses about 250 m over roughly 8 km at a gentle 3% average, on a long, mostly straight road with only a moderate pitch — touching around 7% at most and with no real hairpins to scrub speed for. That makes it an ideal place to build confidence carrying speed: open sightlines, a steady gradient, and lovely views out over the Zürichsee as you go. The road has no bike lanes, but traffic is light and cyclists are a common sight, so you can settle into a relaxed, flowing line all the way down to the lake.
